How many questions does the A1/A3 exam have and what do you need to pass?
Forty multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 75 % of the total score, that is 30 correct out of 40. The forty-minute limit is set by AESA: the European regulation sets none.
Do wrong answers subtract marks?
No. The rule defines only a threshold — 75 % of the total score — and neither the regulation nor AESA describes any deduction for a wrong answer.
Where do you sit the exam and what does it cost?
On the AESA training platform in its electronic office. Registration and the exam are free, and access is via Cl@ve or a digital certificate. You get two attempts and 30 working days from the moment access is granted.
How long is the passed training valid?
Five years from issue, under point 1 of section UAS.OPEN.070 of Regulation (EU) 2019/947. To renew you either demonstrate competence again or take refresher training; once it has expired, only a fresh demonstration of competence works.
Which subjects are examined?
Nine: air safety, airspace restrictions, aviation regulation, human performance limitations, operational procedures, general knowledge of UAS, privacy and data protection, insurance and security.
Is the exam the same across the European Union?
The core is: forty questions, 75 % and the nine subjects come from a directly applicable regulation that member states cannot change. What is national is the procedure — platform, attempts, deadlines — and two subjects filled with each country’s own law: airspace restrictions and insurance. In Spain those come mainly from Royal Decree 517/2024.
