Life in the UK Test Coach: what is in the app, and what is free
Our own app, described plainly: 305 questions written from the handbook, translations in 14 languages, mock tests, and exactly what the free version gives you each day.
This is a description of our own app, so read it knowing that. We have tried to write it the way we would want to read about someone else's: what it does, what it does not do and what you pay for.
What is in it
- 305 questions written from the official handbook. They are not the questions used in the real test, which are not published.
- Questions in the book's order. The Handbook tab follows the book's five chapters and 33 sections, and your progress is shown against each one. The text of the book itself is not in the app.
- Your language under the English. The question and its options stay in English, with a full translation underneath and the explanation in your language. There are 14 languages: Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Arabic, Traditional Chinese, Persian, Turkish, Romanian, Polish, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. You can hide the translation with one tap.
- Mock tests in the real format. 24 questions, 45 minutes, 75% to pass, in English only. Every attempt is saved with your answers, so you can see what went wrong.
- Review after a break. What you have studied returns days later as a new question, on a schedule worked out from your answers. There is more on why in how to remember the handbook.
What is free and what is Premium
| Free | Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| Daily study | One session or a 10-question test | No daily limit |
| Handbook sections and topics | The first topic | All of them |
| Explanations in your language | In what you can open | Everywhere |
| Mock tests and flashcards | No | Yes |
The app is a free download. Premium is sold in the App Store and Google Play, and the store shows the price before you pay, so we do not repeat it here.
What it does not do
It does not replace the official handbook. GOV.UK says you are only tested on that book, and it is worth reading at least once. It does not prove your English either, which is a separate requirement. And it does not book your test: you do that only through GOV.UK.
Who made it
X Maximus Labs, S.L., a small company in Madrid that builds preparation apps for official exams. If a question is wrong or badly translated, there is a "Report a mistake" link under every explanation, and the same address works for anything else: info@xmax.es.
More detail is on the app page.
Frequently asked
Is this the official Life in the UK app?
No. It is an independent app made by X Maximus Labs, S.L., and has no connection with the Home Office, UK Visas and Immigration or the test provider. GOV.UK sells its own official materials through the official shop.
Are these the real test questions?
No. The real questions are not published. We wrote ours from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents, 3rd edition.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no account and no email. Your progress stays on your phone, and the app works offline.

Can you take the Life in the UK Test in your own language?
No: it is in English, with Welsh and Scottish Gaelic as the only exceptions. You can still prepare in your own language, as long as you finish in English. Here is how to split the work.
05 Nov 2026How to remember the Life in the UK handbook: what memory research says
Rereading feels like learning and fades quickly. In one well-known experiment, people who tested themselves remembered 61% a week later, against 40% for those who kept rereading. How to apply that to the test.

Why tinnitus often feels worse in a quiet bedroom, what the NHS suggests instead of silence, what the evidence on sound therapy actually shows, and the symptoms that mean seeing a doctor the same day.
