Airbags are designed to go off only in a strong collision, usually above a certain speed and impact force. When parking, speeds are very low and the forces are not strong enough for the system to detect a serious crash. The airbag sensors analyse deceleration and the force of the impact before deploying. If no significant impact is detected, the airbag will not deploy. Only in exceptional situations, such as hitting a wall hard while parking, could it go off.
