In modern vehicles there is no need to press the accelerator to start the engine. With petrol engines, we will drive off after starting the engine; this way we avoid using fuel while idling (the lowest engine speed the engine needs so as not to stall when we are not accelerating). With diesel engines it is advisable to wait a few seconds before driving off so that lubrication is adequate.
