According to Article 36 of the General Traffic Regulations, vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg that, because of an emergency, are travelling at an abnormally low speed and seriously disrupting traffic must use the hard shoulder if it is passable and wide enough. Vehicles of more than 3,500 kg travel on the carriageway.
