A dirty air filter (dust, insects, impurities, etc.) stops the engine from getting all the air it needs to perform at its best, which increases fuel consumption and pollution. That is why it is important to check it regularly, bearing in mind that it gets dirtier in summer than in winter. The air/petrol mixture will be rich, because it will have too much petrol, as it cannot take in all the air the engine needs when the air filter is dirty or blocked.
