Defensive driving is based on three principles. Vision: collect information early enough to analyse it and react properly; look far ahead, look to the sides often, check the mirrors frequently and turn your head to check the blind spot. Anticipation: anticipate risk by not trusting others and being ready to act, adapting your speed to the circumstances, and making yourself seen and understood (correct use of signals and lights). Space: keeping good distances in front, behind and to the sides gives you room to manoeuvre if anything unexpected happens.
