Because of especially serious circumstances, and with no other means available, the driver of a non-priority vehicle may be forced to do a job normally reserved for priority vehicles. In that case they must try to make other road users aware of their special situation, by sounding the horn intermittently and switching on the hazard warning lights, if they have them, or by waving a handkerchief or similar. In all cases they must respect the traffic rules, especially at junctions.
