With a thick coat, the belt sits away from the body and, in a crash, the occupant moves forward before the belt holds them, with a higher risk of injury. Article 117.1 of the General Traffic Regulations requires the belt to be properly fastened; to be effective it must fit closely to the body, so it is best to take the coat off first.
