According to Article 31.1 of the General Traffic Regulations, outside built-up areas you normally drive in the right lane, but you may use the others when traffic or road conditions make it advisable, without getting in the way of vehicles behind. The restriction for combinations longer than seven metres only applies on carriageways with three or more lanes in each direction (Article 31.2).
