A motorcycle engine that runs only on petrol, with no oil mixed in, is a four-stroke engine. This is because four-stroke engines work by taking a mixture of air and fuel (in this case, petrol) into the cylinder, then compressing the mixture, burning it and finally pushing out the exhaust gases. Two-stroke engines, on the other hand, need a mixture of petrol and oil to lubricate the moving parts of the engine.
