Wearing a seat belt is compulsory for the driver and passengers of cars and of vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kilograms used to carry people and goods, whether at the same time or not. To be effective and do its job, the seat belt must: - Be approved. - Be properly anchored. - Be properly adjusted to fit the body. - Be correctly fastened. A badly adjusted seat or seat belt can lead to submarining. This is when the seat belt cannot hold the driver in the accident and their body slides down under the lap strap.
