A red flag carried by an officer on their vehicle indicates that, from the moment that vehicle passes, the carriageway is temporarily closed to all vehicles and road users. This signal is common in cycle races or official motorcades. No one may overtake the officer or drive behind them until an officer with a green flag passes, which indicates that the road is open again. A yellow flag, on the other hand, would indicate the need to take extreme care because of a nearby danger.
