The seat belt is one of the most important passive safety elements in vehicles; since it was invented it has saved millions of lives. However, it must be worn correctly to avoid serious injuries. The chest strap must go over the collarbone, halfway between the shoulder and the neck, and run down across the middle of the chest. The lap strap must go over the hip bones, always below the abdomen. Once the seat belt is properly fastened, pull the strap slightly upwards so that it fits snugly against the body. Misusing the seat belt, or putting towels, cushions, covers, etc. on the seat, can cause submarining, which is when the seat belt cannot hold us in an accident and we slide down under the lap strap.
