The road markings known as «chevrons» are painted on the carriageway in the shape of an upside-down V. Their main purpose is to set the minimum safe distance between vehicles, which helps to reduce rear-end collisions on risky stretches. They are usually accompanied by road signs saying how many chevrons must be kept between you and the vehicle in front.
