In a front-wheel-drive vehicle, the engine's power is transmitted only to the front wheels, which drive the vehicle forward. In this case the rear wheels simply roll and receive no power from the engine. If the vehicle had rear-wheel drive, the engine's power would be transmitted to the rear wheels, which would be the driving wheels. In that case, the front wheels would only steer the car.
