The speed rating shows the maximum speed the tyres can reach. As a general rule, a vehicle may only be fitted with tyres that have the speed rating recommended by the manufacturer. In exceptional cases, other tyres may be fitted, as long as their speed rating is higher than the one recommended by the manufacturer, never lower.
