If the vehicle is immobilised on a motorway or dual carriageway, the hazard warning lights must always be used, even during the day, and if the cause is a breakdown the hazard warning device must also be placed. The V-16 hazard warning device is a type-approved amber flashing light with geolocation, powered by its own battery. It must be placed on the highest part of the immobilised vehicle to ensure maximum visibility. At present the V-16 is the only legal option for signalling an immobilised vehicle or an obstacle on the road; warning triangles are no longer used.
