On a motorway (autopista), the safe distance in Article 54.1 of the General Traffic Regulations (RGC) is enough: one that lets you stop without hitting the vehicle in front. The minimum gap of 50 metres only applies to vehicles over 3,500 kg or over 10 metres long, and does not apply where there is more than one lane in each direction.
