Under Article 34 of the General Traffic Regulations, when counting the lanes on a carriageway, lanes reserved for certain vehicles or certain manoeuvres are not taken into account. This helps drivers choose the right lane for where they are going without interfering with other traffic. For example, lanes reserved for buses or high-occupancy vehicles are exclusive and are therefore left out of the count of lanes available to other vehicles.
