Under Article 117.1 of the General Traffic Regulations (RGC), the driver and occupants of vehicles must wear a fastened seat belt both in and outside built-up areas, and taxi passengers have no exemption. Since Royal Decree 518/2026 (Art. 119.2), taxi drivers are not exempt in built-up areas either; in urban traffic, a taxi may only carry people shorter than 135 cm without a suitable restraint device if they sit in a rear seat.
